SIMS Online Update Sevice (SOLUS)
The move to SIMS .net has allowed Capita ES to make SIMS upgrades easier, to the point that they can now be performed automatically on a workstation without intervention using the SIMS Online Update Service (SOLUS).
The SOLUS download facility is now being used as the principle method of updating SIMS systems in a large number of schools and Local Authorities. SOLUS provides a web-based service to allow System Managers to download the latest SIMS releases and perform upgrades using a simple ‘wizard’.
The SIMS system is even clever enough to know when an individual workstation needs to be updated and will perform the upgrade automatically when that computer next logs into SIMS.
SOLUS has now been in use in some authorities for a year. A recent survey of LAs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland indicated that 94% of the 78 LAs that have responded to the survey are now using SOLUS and over a third are using it in all or most of their schools.
The SIMS Online Update Service (SOLUS) downloads, verifies and runs update files from a website (http://www.capitasolus.co.uk) using a download application called the SOLUS Wizard. Three simple steps required to update using SOLUS:
- Capita notify customers that the release is available via SOLUS 2.
- The SOLUS Wizard is run to download the release onto the SIMS File Server
- SIMS .net users then run SIMS .net. Whilst SIMS .net is being loaded, a utility called SIMSLoad checks the SIMS File Server for updates and runs them accordingly. The upgrade is completed and SIMS .net is opened.
For more details of how SOLUS can improve the process of updating SIMS in your school, please contact your SIMS support provider.
